Question for Residents of Ireland

On the rare occasion that there's a bad thunder/electrical storm in Ireland, my mother-in-law (OAP) takes the time to unplug as much of her electrical appliances and electronics as possible from the wall outlets. I have always thought this to be a bit old fashioned and absurd.

Well sure enough, a week or so ago a storm rolled through her area and by the end of it, a number of her electronics were damaged as well as her landline telephone.
